Own-Occupation Disability Insurance

Own occupation disability insurance allows you to collect for a disability while still working another less-demanding job, simultaneously. There are actually several types of own-occupation disability insurance, depending on the policy. Here are some of the variations you could encounter.

True Own-Occupation: In its original form, claimants receive all benefits for the position they held when they signed the contract. If they choose to work in another capacity that accommodates the disability, that is acceptable and no benefits are withheld.

Modified Own-Occupation: This policy strictly enforces that the claimant may not be working any job to receive benefits. Also commonly known as income replacement.

Translational Own-Occupation: For claimants who decide to work a different job, translational own-occ adjusts the benefits to ensure that the individual’s combined incomes do not exceed their previous salary.
